Introducing our first collaboration.
Some chairs start with a shape. Alice started with a fabric.
We met (Alice) Sgrinhouse exhibiting at Focus 2025 - Chelsea Harbour, and the fabric on their stand stopped us in our tracks.
Hand screen printed— you could see the difference the moment you looked, and feel it the moment you touched it. We knew straight away we'd found a studio working to the same standard we hold ourselves to. We had barely said ten words to each other before 'collaboration' was mentioned.
When we first visited Sgrinhouse we took with us of a prototype of the chair shape we had been working on, and the excitement grew from there.
In true Planted style, we have named the chair Alice, after Sgrinhouse's founder, Alice Smith — whose eye for pattern shaped this piece as much as our own hands did.
Built the way furniture should be
Underneath the fabric, Alice is built exactly the way we build every piece at Planted: a solid beech frame, hand-tied springs, and cotton and wool layered in by hand.
No chemicals, no synthetic fillings, nothing to break down and release into your home over time.
Just skill, applied properly, by someone who signs their name to the piece they've made.
We'd been sketching ideas for a new chair for a while — something modern, armless, at home in a bedroom but not confined to it. We just hadn't landed on the shape. Then we saw Sgrinhouse's "Stripes" print, in rust, and the design followed almost immediately. Simple from the front. A quieter detail hidden in the side. And a decision to carry the print all the way down, over the legs, so the fabric becomes the whole story rather than a finishing touch.
Two studios, one instinct
"Stripes" draws on influences including Anni Albers and Agnes Martin, with its rust colourway echoing the maritime landscape running through Sgrinhouse's wider collection. It's the kind of pattern that rewards a closer look — which felt right for a chair built the same way.
A note on Sgrinhouse
Sgrinhouse is a studio dedicated to hand screen-printing, founded by Alice Smith, who was awarded ‘Best Newcomer in Fabric’ 2025 award last Autumn by Homes & Gardens for her textile design work.
Every fabric is designed and printed in-house, from first sketch to finished cloth, on fine linen.
Where Alice fits
We designed Alice as a bedroom chair, but she's proved more versatile than that — a reading chair, a statement piece in a hallway or living room, or a way to show off a fabric you've fallen for but haven't known where to put. A longer version is already in the works, suited to the end of a bed or a bay window.
